FRIENDS OF MYKONOS FOLKLORE MUSEUM

The association “Friends of Mykonos Folklore Museum” was established in 2011, to express the will of Mykonians, as well as visiting art lovers, who wished for the museum’s facilities to continue operating in a secure environment.
The association also exists to document and improve the condition of the collections, to solve existing and future facilities issues, and to help the museum reach a wider audience.

ANNUAL EVENTS

Early in December, an art workshop for kids is realized, with the help of the “Friends”, culminating in the construction of a “karava”, the sized down model of a boat, that locals traditionally decorate their houses with during Christmas, or hold while chanting carols from door to door.
The second Sunday in September the grape harvest feast takes place, at Milos tou Boni (Farming Museum). There, both kids and grown ups can participate in grape stomping and the production of grape must, continuing an ages old Dionysian tradition

Regular presentations and workshops are run at local schools, concerning folkloristic subjects, enabling the younger generations to engage with the tangible and intangible heritage of the island.
Seminars for all ages are run, teaching traditional styles of knitting, lacework, embroidery, jewelcrafting and doll-making.
